Notable Quotes

Select at least three notable lines from Act 2. Type them below (giving the page number in parenthesis at the end of the quote). For each, explain the context (what's happening in the play) and the significance (why the quote is important/meaningful to the play).

Quote:  pg. 49- John Proctor: "It's winter in here yet. On Sunday let you come with me, and we'll walk the farm together; I never see such a load of flowers on the earth. Lilacs have a purple smell. Lilac is the smell of nightfall, I think. Massachusetts is a beauty in the spring!"

 Context Significance
Proctor says, "It's winter in here yet", which symbolizes his wife's coldness towards him.

It reveals the tension from Proctor's previous relationship with Abigail.

Quote: pg. 68- Rev. Hale: "Man, remember, until an hour before the Devil fell, God thought him beautiful in Heaven."

 Context Significance
That even evil can seem beautiful at first- a.k.a. Abigail.

That though the woman seems harmless and good, she could be evil!

Quote: pg. 76- John Proctor: "Make your peace with it! Now Hell and Heaven grapple on our backs, and all-our old pretense is ripped away- make your peace! Peace. It is providence, and no great change; we are only what we always were, but naked now. Aye, naked! And the wind, God's icy wind, will blow!"
